It should come as no surprise that many celebrities are weed enthusiasts. Artists of all media’s have been long since associated with marijuana. We all know how much a great strain can help spark your creativity or give you another perspective that your sober self could not see. In this day and age when you can safely buy cannabis online it’s good to know who helped get us there.
There was a time that admitting to recreational cannabis use would blacklist your career in Hollywood. Nowadays celebrities of all walks of life are praising cannabis for it medicinal use and rushing to partner with large cannabis producers to brand their own products. While there is most certainly thousands (if not millions) of celebrities that have embraced the cannabis industry here are some of the more notable figures:
The Mt. Rushmore of Weed Celebrities
Much like the famous US monument, here are my “weed celebrities” forefathers. These people didn’t invent the idea, but they helped to praise cannabis in a world that wanted to lock you up for just getting high. All of these celebrities have a strain named after them fyi.
Here is my Mt Rushmore in no particular order:
This is a no brainer even if you do not like his music. Willie is basically the personification of a really mellow Indica in my opinion. A true legend that has even claimed to smoke a joint in the White House! Willie has been persecuted for his love of ganja numerous times. Despite persecution, Willie continued to advocate for medicinal and recreational marijuana. We all need to thank celebrities like Willie Nelson who refused to comply.
The undisputed king of reggae, Bob Marley is one of the most recognizable marijuana enthusiasts in the world. Throughout his life he advocated for legalization and he believed in the many benefits of regular cannabis use. Bob was arrested numerous times for possession as well. In the face of the law, Bob Marley continued to advocate peacefully for what was just.
Have you tried the labrador? Exactly! That’s why Tommy Chong is on the Mount. The Cheech and Chong movie’s helped to shake any violent “reefer madness” myths about cannabis to the world. The lovable duo have been making people laugh and be happy for decades. Once the duo separated, Tommy continued to advocate for legalization and became synonymous weed throughout the world. He was an original in the celebrity branded marijuana products industry and continues to work in the industry.
Probably the most debatable pick in my celebrity Mt Rushmore, Snoop Dogg is noticeably more modern than the previous three. While I could have continued to use notable figures from the past, I could not deny one truth; Snoop Dogg is one of the most synonymous figures with marijuana. Even those who don’t know his music know his connection to weed. I mean it’s Snoop! He is a true weed icon no doubt about it. He has been licensing his name for numerous marijuana products for years.
Weed Celebrities: runners-up
Okay so here’s the issue with Mt Rushmore; it’s only got four spots (and technically Cheech should be included with Chong). While I wanted my Mt Rushmore to honor the OG’s of cannabis, here is a list of some more modern celebrities that are as associated with weed as Bob Marley these days:
Probably the most famous Canadian stoner (sorry Marc Emery), Seth has appeared in and created some of the best cannabis media. He has recently taken advantage of his 420 persona and is about to launch his own cannabis products.
I am still trying to buy a pair of his hemp pants (lame Simpsons reference). Woody exploded on the screen in “White Men Can’t Jump” following his start on Cheers. He has since used his celebrity to advocate for free use of hemp and marijuana products for decades.
if you have not seen Half Baked then I will wait for you to watch that now…… so your all caught up? Fantastic. In addition to one of the most iconic weed movies ever, Dave has built a successful stand up career and has thanked weed for its benefits along the way. He has long talked about the futility of weed crimes, and continues to advocate for recreational use.
The mind bending guitar riffs, the psychedelic imagery and stage presence, no doubt about it, Jimi Hendrix and weed mix very well together. The iconic purple haze strain will ensure that no one soon forgets Jimi Hendrix.
Mike has joined a growing list of athletes who are publicly advocating for recreational and medicinal marijuana use. Mike, like many athletes, spent years dealing with pain from their careers with opioids only too see their devastating effects. Mike has since praised cannabis for its many benefits and advocates for others to use marijuana to help ease pain and calm the soul. He’s even started his own line of cannabis!
Now I am sure that you may have additions or subtractions to this list. Admittedly I am aware of weed icons like the band Phish and comedian Doug Benson, I just don’t feel they belong on a mountain or monument. But I love a constructive debate so give us your pick and why and who knows, you may just alter my list.
Also look out for my “battle of the weed bands” article in the future as it became clear to me that music celebrities DOMINATE the weed zeitgeist.
