A calming heaviness sets over you. Your brain shifts into low gear. Sounds begin to fade out. Moving seems incredibly difficult, even though nothing is wrong. Even turning your head seems to take an absolutely herculean effort compared to normal. Your eyes burn and weigh more and more until keeping them open seems like a punishment. You should go to bed – but everything is so comfy and it doesn’t seem worth it to get up and go lay down. If this sounds at all familiar to you – you’ve been there and can definitely answer the question
What is couch lock?
Couch lock is that feeling that every stoner will be familiar with. Usually brought on by a sparklingly powerful indica – couch lock is the extreme sedated laziness stoners are famous for. Depending on the strain, cannabis can bring on a strong feeling of tiredness. That can be one of its biggest strengths, or biggest drawback depending on what’s in front of you.
A good ‘couch lock’ inducing strain will often leave you with reddened eyes, putting you into a trance like state. The outside world falls away leaving you to focus on your own thoughts until you drift off to sleep, or become absolutely enthralled with whatever is on TV. Your extremities will tingle and slow as minor aches and pains melt away.
If you’re suffering from insomnia, or just had a long-ass day and are done with the world for the next 8 hours – couch lock inducing strains are just the ticket to send you off to your best sleep. Often it doesn’t even take that much if you find one that hits you just right. Couch lock will strike when you least expect it to and leave you snoring, dribbling down your chin, with netflix burning that familiar question into the TV – “ARE YOU STILL WATCHING?”
Now – if you’ve got something you need to accomplish, you might have a problem. Sativas are my favorite, but sometimes I just can’t resist a particularly frosty indica when Walter puts them up.(a great mnemonic for effects: Indica=In-da-couch) A good indica will have a higher THC content than the best pure sativas – so they can really knock you over. That could be a problem – but we know what to do!
If you need to combat Couch Lock:
High – CBD strains or even some CBD isolate can help you beat couch-lock into submission. It can also calm your anxieties, and is just in general recommended.
The perfect compliment to a joint is often a simple coffee. Just enough to perk you up and combat the sedative effects of that juicy nugget you just bought.
Lowest on the list because it’s the worst for you – but sugary snacks or soft drinks will give you a quick glucose rush and might snap you out of couch lock. My favourites are gummies or Starburst – I just hate dealing with wrappers all over the place!
Unfortunately we don’t fully know which cannabinoid is responsible for couch lock. THC plays a role in it, but the same effects aren’t usually observed with a sativa so we can narrow it down somewhat. The terpenes, flavinoids and cannabinoids have an entourage effect with the THC to ‘shape’ the effects, and ‘colour’ your high. There is some science to say that the terpene myrcene is responsible for making you sleepy – but plenty of strains with low levels of myrcene are known to have a healthy sedative effect. Still a mystery to us then.
Of course we’re all different – some folks rarely get hit with couch lock while many others are knocked down by just a few puffs. Some actively seek it out, while some simply smoke too much to be bogged down by a body buzzing strain. Sometimes no matter what you smoke if you smoke too much couch lock is unavoidable.
One thing you can be sure of – Plenty of the strains available here when you buy cannabis online will leave you locked into a state of bliss.
